In Vietnam in particular and in the world in general, the burden of cancer is becoming serious, requiring special attention from the whole society. According to the 2024 report of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), it is estimated that by 2050, the number of global cancer cases will reach 35 million people. In particular, although childhood cancer is a relatively rare disease group. However, the rate of cancer in children increasing slightly over time is still a concern. According to WHO, every day in the world, more than 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. In high-income countries, 80% of children diagnosed will survive. However, in low- and middle-income countries, this figure is only 20%.
According to Dr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health (Ministry of Health), data from the Ministry of Health shows that Vietnam is simultaneously suffering from three nutritional burdens, which are malnutrition (stunting, wasting), overweight, obesity and micronutrient deficiency. Faced with the current major challenge, to improve nutritional status, thereby contributing to enhancing the stature, physical strength and intelligence of Vietnamese people, the Department of Maternal and Child Health has accompanied the Ministry of Health in the National Strategy on nutrition to implement many specialized interventions to achieve targets on improving malnutrition in children, maternal nutrition, prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, and related risk factors in children, adolescents and adults.
The program of “80,000 glasses of milk for children with cancer” implemented by Nutricare Company in collaboration with Health and Life Newspaper since 2023 has also brought great significance in supporting nutrition for children with cancer during treatment, allowing children to have better health to fight the disease. The Department of Maternal and Child Health highly appreciates the spirit of mutual love and the noble gesture of the enterprise in providing nutritional care for children with cancer, for the overall health of the community. We hope that in the second year, the program will continue to achieve positive results and contribute to improving nutrition for vulnerable groups in society, specifically children with cancer” – Dr. Tran Dang Khoa spoke at the event.
