In Vietnam in particular and in the world in general, the burden of cancer is becoming increasingly serious, requiring special attention from the entire society. According to statistics from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the number of new cancer patients and deaths from cancer in the world increases each year.

Statistics from the Global Cancer Organization (GLOBOCAN) on 185 countries show that, from 2018 to 2021, Vietnam increased from position 99 to position 90 in terms of the rate of new cancer patients; from 56th position increased to 50th in the number of deaths due to cancer.

Although pediatric cancer is a relatively rare group of diseases, it accounts for less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed each year. However, pediatric cancer rates have increased slightly over the past few decades. In the world, each year about 160,000 new children get cancer and 90,000 children die from this disease. In Vietnam alone, about 1,800 children get the disease each year. In developed countries cancer is the second leading cause of death in children under 14 years of age.

With cancer in general, especially pediatric cancer, early detection is extremely important, helping treatment to be highly effective and a great number of patients can be completely cured. Cure rates in children are generally around 70-80%.

However, in developing countries, including ours, more than 50% of children with cancer are diagnosed at a late stage and do not receive adequate treatment. The rate of survival and disease recovery are still low. Therefore, it is necessary to increase communication of knowledge about childhood cancer, know-how to detect common early signs of the disease for early detection and timely treatment, increasing children’s chances of survival.

During cancer treatment, besides taking medication and complying with treatment regimens, nutrition is the basic foundation, contributing to prolonging life and improving quality of life for patients. However, nutritional care has not really received attention from patients, leading to malnutrition becoming common in cancer patients, leading to cachexia, making patients weak, losing weight, and muscle atrophy, loss of subcutaneous fat… Statistics show that up to 50 – 80% of cancer patients lose weight and about 30% of patients die from physical exhaustion before dying from cancer. Therefore, cancer patients need good and active nutritional care to compensate for weight loss, maintain health and receive better treatment interventions.
