According to research results published in NCBI [1] (2017), untreated cancer-related malnutrition can lead to serious consequences. Malnourished colorectal cancer patients tolerate fewer chemotherapy cycles, while other cancer patients who are debilitated or undernourished have a higher risk of chemotherapy toxicity.
Furthermore, malnourished patients being treated for oral cancer have lower scores on the quality of life (QOL) scale related to physical function. While patients who were nurtured and were able to maintain their weight or gain weight had significantly better QOL.
Malnutrition also increases the financial costs of cancer patients’ treatment, including the cost of longer hospital stays and higher rates of postoperative complications related to cancer.
