Vitamin K was discovered in 1929 as an essential nutrient for blood clotting. Vitamin K plays an important role in bone and cardiovascular health. Originally, vitamin K was reported in a German scientific journal as “Koagulationvitamin” (The origin of “K”).

Vitamin K was also discovered by dentist Weston Price, who traveled around the world in the early 20th century to study the relationship between diet and disease in different populations. He found that the non-industrial diet was high in nutrients of unknown origin, which seemed to help protect against tooth decay and chronic disease. He called this mysterious nutrient “activator X”, which is now thought to be vitamin K2.

Vitamin K comes in two forms, K1 (found in plant foods) and K2 (found in animal foods and fermented foods). Studies on humans have also observed that vitamin K2 supplementation generally improves bone and heart health, while vitamin K1 has no significant benefit.

The role of vitamin K2 in bones, joints and cardiovascular

Bone and joints are two important factors that silently affect the health of the elderly over the years. In particular, vitamin K2 is like an “effective assistant” of calcium that works to help promote bone and cardiovascular health. In fact, if you only focus on supplementing with calcium, it will lead to many risks such as increased calcium deposition in the vessel walls, in the kidneys, etc. Therefore, the addition of extra K2 can solve this problem.

Studies have shown that poor Vitamin K2 intake is associated with low bone mass, osteoporosis, and fracture risk. Therefore, the addition of vitamin K2 will help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis.

Vitamin K2 is also believed to help prevent calcium from building up in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. In a study that lasted 7–10 years, people with the highest levels of vitamin K2 had a 52% lower risk of arterial calcification and a 57% lower risk of dying from heart disease.

Another study in 16,057 women found that participants with the highest levels of vitamin K2 had a much lower risk of heart disease. For every 10 mcg of vitamin K2 they consumed each day, on average, their risk of heart disease was reduced by 9%.
