(Dan tri) – Children born by C-section may have a different start in the development of their gut microbiota, which can affect digestive and immune health during the early years of life.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that the C-section rate in Viet Nam increased 3-fold over the past 15 years.

Differences in microbiota may affect digestion and immunity in children born by C-section

At a nutrition conference for children born by C-section organized by Nutricare and the Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institute–USA (NMNI-USA), experts explained that children born by C-section often have a different gut microbiota from those born vaginally because they miss the natural “transfer” of beneficial bacteria from their mothers during birth.

Labor is considered to “awaken” a child’s immune system during birth. Through this natural contact, beneficial bacteria become established in the gut—the site of approximately 70% of the body’s immune system. Not passing through the birth canal gives children born by C-section fewer opportunities to come into contact with beneficial bacteria from their mothers immediately after birth.

Beneficial bacteria not only support digestion but also help reduce the risk of allergies, limit intestinal infections, and participate in the synthesis of essential vitamins such as vitamin K and B vitamins.

According to experts, immune-system maturation in children born by C-section may take up to 6 months to achieve sufficient levels of beneficial bacteria, compared with only 10 days for children born vaginally. This slower maturation can lead to problems such as poor digestion, allergies, and respiratory issues. These factors may affect a child’s long-term developmental foundation if they are not addressed early.

Nutrition – the key to addressing deficiencies in children born by C-section

Many studies have shown that nutrition during the early years of life plays an important role in helping children born by C-section develop their digestive and immune systems. However, effective nutritional care requires an approach suited to the distinct biological characteristics of this group of children.

Breastfeeding remains the top priority. Breast milk contains beneficial biological components, particularly human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which serve as a “food source” for beneficial bacteria – especially Bifidobacteria – while also helping prevent disease-causing bacteria from adhering to the intestinal lining.

In addition, Lactoferrin and natural IgG antibodies have antibacterial properties and help regulate immune function by inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms.

Experts also emphasize that being born by C-section does not mean a child is “weaker”; rather, it is a factor associated with a different biological starting point. Appropriate support can help the child adapt and develop healthily.

In practice, however, not every mother can maintain an adequate milk supply. Delayed lactation or difficulty maintaining milk production may result from health factors or medical interventions. As a result, demand is increasing for nutritional solutions that support the development of the digestive and immune systems of children born by C-section.

In response to practical needs, Nutricare and the Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institute–USA (NMNI-USA) researched and developed the Metacare Opti C-Section formula nutrition product and the Metacare Opti Lactoferrin ready-to-drink nutritional milk supplement—a nutritional solution designed for children born by C-section to support healthy digestion and stronger resistance.

The products feature a formula containing a high concentration of a 6-HMO complex, said to have a structure similar to HMOs in breast milk, combined with Lactoferrin and Colostrum—components that play an important role in supporting children’s immune and digestive systems.

A key highlight of the formula is the breakthrough addition of 50 billion Postbiotic cells (the minimum number of Postbiotic cells in 3 110 ml boxes), combined with dietary fiber to support a healthy digestive system and prevent constipation. With their ability to maintain stable biological activity, Postbiotics help support a balanced gut microbiota, thereby aiding digestion and reducing the risk of digestive disorders in young children.

The products are also supplemented with DHA and Omega 3 to support brain development, along with calcium and vitamins D3 and K2 to support height and physical development so that children can keep pace with their growth trajectory.

Nutricare affirms its research capabilities and long-term commitment to the health of children in Viet Nam

Launching the Metacare Opti C-Section formula nutrition product and the Metacare Opti Lactoferrin ready-to-drink nutritional milk supplement to upgrade its product portfolio is a natural step in Nutricare’s long-term development strategy. As consumer expectations continue to rise, particularly among young parents, they seek not only safe products but also specialized nutritional solutions with a clear scientific basis.

Entering this segment with products suitable for children born by C-section demonstrates Nutricare’s research capabilities, innovation, and ability to meet the market’s more stringent standards. More importantly, Nutricare seeks to offer consumers in Viet Nam additional high-quality choices produced domestically.
