suckhoedoisong.vn – Today, July 17, in Hanoi, the Announcement Ceremony of Cooperation in Research and Development of Medical Nutrition Products between Nutricare Nutrition Joint Stock Company and Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institution – USA took place (NMNI-USA) marks a new milestone on the journey to realizing Nutricare’s desire to improve the health of millions of Vietnamese families.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Minh – General Director of Nutricare Nutrition Joint Stock Company and Dr. David Clark, Director of Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institute – USA (NMNI-USA) discussed and signed a cooperation agreement on research and development of nutritional medical products 

Vietnam is facing a “double burden” of nutrition  

Speaking at the event, Dr. Tran Dang Khoa – Deputy Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, Ministry of Health stated that, in recent years, thanks to the efforts of the entire medical staff, specialized in reproductive health/maternal-child health, support from domestic and international organizations, reproductive health care, maternal and child health care in Vietnam has achieved several positive results, especially reducing the rate of child malnutrition: Vietnam is a bright spot in implementing the Millennium Development Goals, highly appreciated by the international community, demonstrating the development of Vietnamese medicine, the superior policies, attention and investment of the Party and State in this field.

However, despite the achievements, there is still a challenge in the gap in maternal and child health indicators between urban and plain areas compared to mountainous, remote areas, specifically, the malnutrition rate of children in these areas is still twice as high.

The results of the 2019-2020 Census show that Vietnam is facing a “double burden” of nutrition including: micronutrient malnutrition with overweight and obesity and chronic non-communicable diseases.

In the National Strategy on Nutrition for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2045 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 02/QD-TTg dated January 5, 2022, the overall goal has also been determined. Implementing proper nutrition to improve nutritional status appropriate to each individual, locality, region, and ethnic group, contributing to reducing the burden of disease, improving stature, physical strength, and intelligence of Vietnamese people.

Mr. Khoa said that to achieve the above goal, the Strategy has assigned specific targets to the Health Sector: by 2030, improve the rate of malnutrition in stunted children under 5 years old to below 15%, mountainous areas below 23%; skinny condition at less than 3%; and indicators on improving maternal nutritional status, preventing chronic non-communicable diseases, and related risk factors in children, adolescents and adults.

The cooperation in Research and Development of Medical Nutrition products between Nutricare and the Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institute – USA is of significance importance, bringing nutritional products beneficial to community health. The fact that Vietnamese businesses are constantly researching, exploring, improving, and collaborating internationally to improve the quality of nutritional products is encouraging, and is also a positive signal contributing to improving health for the community, especially mothers, children and adults at risk of chronic non-communicable diseases” – Deputy Director Tran Dang Khoa commented.

At the event, Mr. Khoa also provided additional information and accompanied the Ministry of Health in implementing the National Strategy on Nutrition, and to continue improving nutrition indicators for mothers and children, the Department of Health Maternal and child health has implemented a large number of professional interventions, including composition a record to monitor maternal and child health; Collaborate with Health & Life Newspaper to create content for the specialized website somevabe.suckhoedoisong.vn to update information, knowledge, advice and guidance from leading doctors and experts in maternal and child health care; Develop and deploy nutritionally balanced menu software for mothers and children…

At the ceremony, Dr. David Clark also shared about malnutrition, highlighting the “double burden” of malnutrition as well as the importance of solving the problem of malnutrition in Vietnam. At the same time, Director of NMNI-USA also brought useful information from lessons around the world on malnutrition prevention strategies as well as recommendations from the World Health Organization – WHO on the application of F100 High Energy formula (100ml nutritional product provides 100kcal) in the standard treatment regimen for malnourished and stunted children.
