Nutrition training: Growth and protection for malnourished children according to World Health Organization recommendations

Vietnam is facing a “double burden” of nutrition

According to the definition of the World Health Organization, malnutrition is a deficiency or excess of nutrients, an imbalance of essential nutrients.

The results of the 2019-2020 Census show that Vietnam is facing a “double burden” of nutrition including: micronutrient malnutrition, overweight, obesity and chronic non-communicable diseases. At the same time, the reduction in the rate of stunting in children in Vietnam tends to slow down, at less than 1% since 2015. Meanwhile, the number of overweight and obese children has doubled within 10 years from 2010 to 2020.

Dr. David Clark – Director of NMNI – USA said that for young children, from 6 to 24 months old is the period when children have the highest risk of mild malnutrition. The short-term consequence of this condition is psychomotor development disorders and the risk of progressing to severe malnutrition. Without nutritional intervention and timely treatment regimens, malnutrition will lead to a series of problems such as children’s underdeveloped ability, intelligence, and awareness as well as the risk of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes…

Dr. David Clark – Director of NMNI-USA shared at the training session

Protect and improve the health of malnourished children according to World Health Organization recommendations

Malnutrition causes various consequences for children’s future growth and development. Therefore, protecting and improving the health of malnourished children according to WHO recommendations is extremely important.

Dr. David Clark emphasized that, through conducting research on severely malnourished children, the World Health Organization has made recommendations on nutritional formulas that should be used for malnourished children, especially High energy formula F-100 (100 kcal/100 ml, 2.9 g protein/100 ml). F-100 means that 100ml of the preparation provides up to 100kcal. The concentrated formula of energy, protein and other micronutrients in F-100 helps children catch up with growth and rebuild tissue lost during long-term malnutrition. F-100 product was researched by scientists and included in the standard treatment regimen for malnourished children by WHO and the Ministry of Health of Vietnam.

At the nutrition training session, many questions surrounding this content were answered by experts to help attendees understand more about the important role of recommended standard nutrition in improving their nutritional health of Vietnamese children.

A large number of inquiries related to malnutrition in children were clarified by experts at the training session

Mr. Kien – representative of Nutricare’s Medical Nutrition product distribution store in the Central region shared: “Lots of my customers who come to the store share that they are looking for nutritional supplements to support nutritional needs for the health of their children.” With the useful information shared by experts during the training session, I got to know what is the recommendation of WHO for standard nutrition so I can spread it and help people find products that suit their children nutritional needs.”

It is known that this nutrition training session is part of a series of collaborative activities between Nutricare and the Nutricare Medical Nutrition Institute – USA (NMNI-USA) to raise awareness about the role of Medical Nutrition in physical and mental health.
